10 Powerful Ways to Focus on Yourself and Not Others
Finding time to focus on yourself and not others can seem impossible.
We spend so much of our days catering to work, family, chores, to-do lists and so much more that we leave no time for ourselves.
Many of us are living in a never-ending loop (and are quite frankly drowning).
We simply forget that dedicating meaningful time for ourselves is crucial to creating happiness in life.
Understanding how to focus on yourself and why is the first step to maintaining a positive life balance.

Why Focusing on Yourself is So Important
I already mentioned that finding time to focus on you is imperative to happiness and balance, but let’s dig a little deeper.
Benefits of Focusing on Yourself:
- Prevent burnout and exhaustion – this study reports that people feel less exhausted when they treat themselves
- Improve your relationships
- Your needs and wants will be met
- You’ll feel more content on a regular basis
- When tough times happen, you’ll be able to deal with them easier
Tips To Focus on Yourself and Not Others
Here are some ways to make focusing on yourself easier, especially if you’re used to saying yes to others even when you don’t have the time or headspace.
1. Dedicate Regular ‘Me Time’ in Your Calendar
Physically block time in your calendar for things that matter to you.
Example:
If you would like to go for a mid-day walk, block 30 minutes in your calendar every day – and follow through on actually going for the walk.
This prevents people from booking meetings and appointments with you which means you are taking back your time, even when busy.
2. Focus on 5 Key Areas of Your Life
To find contentment it’s important to focus on different parts of your life. Specifically the following areas:
- Emotional
- Intellectual
- Social
- Spiritual
- Physical
For example, you can focus on different types of self-care in these 5 areas, which helps you look after your mind, body and soul.
3. Get Comfortable with Saying No
In order to create some space in your calendar, you can start to practice saying no. Now, I’m not suggesting you say no to everyone, but you can say no to people or things that don’t serve your happiness.
For example:
if you know someone who always asks for favours and isn’t there for you when you need them, this is a good person to say no when you can.

4. Be Honest with Yourself
Truly think about what makes you happy, how you can find balance in a way that is unique to your life situation.
Sure, you can do things to focus on yourself, but these activities need to cater to your true self.
This is a little reminder to focus on what brings a smile to your face, not what you think you should be doing.
10 Ways to Focus on Yourself and Not Others
1. Start Practicing Self Love
A great way to practice self-love is with these 30 self-love journal prompts.
This act alone is an enjoyable way to prioritize yourself.
More so, what you learn from these journal prompts will also help you stay on track so you can focus on yourself and not others.
Some examples of the journal prompts…
- I am worthy of happiness because…
- How would your past younger self be proud of who you’ve become today?
- How can you set healthy boundaries in your relationships?
Get all of the journal prompts in the link above or you can get them in my Love Yourself First Daily Guided Journal – now available on Amazon.
2. Create a Mindful Morning Routine
First thing in the morning is a perfect time to devote to starting the day off right.
By creating a mindful morning routine you’ll discover what an impact it can have on how you feel for the rest of the day.
Consider adding a new activity to your morning routine such as journaling, going for a walk or reading.
Even if you only take 15 minutes to do this new activity it will make a substantial difference. Once you get in the habit of this new morning activity you can add a second one in.
Remember, small steps really work when changing your routine for the long term.
3. Work on Your Personal Goals
We all have goals, but when you’re not dedicating time to yourself it can be really hard to make your goals a reality.
Spend some time thinking about a personal goal you’d like to achieve and write it down.

Once you choose a goal, practice making it SMART (see details of how to do this in the Personal Goals article linked above).
Then it’s time to commit and follow through on this goal.
4. Try a New Hobby (or Get Back to an Old One)
Hobbies aren’t old for kids. Yes, it is possible to be an adult, have a job, raise a family and create time for a hobby. It really is.
If starting a new hobby and creating time for a hobby you already love is important to you, it can be done.
Just remember to dedicate the time.

5. Go on a Date with Yourself
This is my all-time favourite way to focus on myself – and it’s fun too! It might sound silly, but that is part of the charm of dating yourself.
Yes, we go places by ourselves but going on a date with yourself is as it sounds… a walk and coffee shop date, art gallery, wine, flowers and cooking your favourite dinner.
The idea here is to do things that you love. Don’t wait to do them with someone else as not everyone loves what you love.
6. Prioritize Your Mental Health
After the last couple of years, mental health has (thankfully) been on more people’s radar. Supporting your mental health can be done in so many ways.
Here are some examples:
- See a therapist or social worker if you’re going through a hard time (this can be arranged through your family doctor).
- Track your mood – download this free printable mood tracker that connects your mood to daily activities so you can identify your triggers and understand what makes you feel good.
- Get active – even 15 to 30 minutes of activity a day can get those happy hormones pumping.
- Focus on yourself (yep, just following the steps in this article is a big part of supporting your mental health and emotional wellbeing).
7. Create a Happy Week Focused on Self Care
As mentioned earlier, there are 5 types of self-care that can help you create a balanced life.
One way you can do this is with these printable Self Care worksheets. They include ideas for each type of self-care, plus a calendar to track them.
You can stick this to your fridge and create a self-care plan that helps you focus on yourself all week long!
8. Incorporate Gratitude Into Your Life
We know it’s important to be grateful, but did you know that practicing gratitude can have so many positive benefits to your health and wellness?
Gratitude can make us feel happier, increase self-esteem, improve psychological well-being, increase optimism, improve our relationships and so much more.
A big part of having an attitude of gratitude is being content with what you already have in life. Doing this will help you see that you actually have a lot to be grateful for.

9. Enjoy Life’s Simple Pleasures
Are you creating space to enjoy the simple pleasures in your daily life?
Whether it’s drinking a steaming cup of tea, enjoying the patter of rain on a spring day or people-watching in the park; these little things can have a big impact on our happiness.
You can start enjoying some simple pleasures based on your 5 senses (sight, smell, touch, taste and sound).
This is easy to do and it’s really all about taking notice of the little things that bring you joy.
10. Dedicate Time To Relax
Whether it’s doing nothing, reading a book, having a nap or watching Netflix, make sure you make time for simple relaxation – whatever it looks like for you.
Sometimes it’s even good to feel bored.
With all of our conflicting to-do’s, having regular downtime to just be is so important to your overall well-being.
Also, please don’t feel guilty about relaxing. We all need it.
How to Focus on Yourself and Be Happy: Time to Commit
You can read all of these tips and get ideas on how you can focus on yourself and not others, but it really just comes down to making a commitment.
Commit to yourself that you will:
- Prioritize your happiness
- Find new ways to look after yourself
- Listen (and respond) to what your mind and body need
- Dedicate time and resources to yourself, even when it seems hard
What does focusing on yourself mean to you?
Grab a notebook or your journal and answer these questions…
- When you focus on yourself (and prioritize yourself), how do you feel? Write down 5 positive emotions.
- If you had more time in your day, what would you do?
- What are 3 ways you can make more time in your day?
After you think about and answer these questions, promise yourself that you will do one small thing today (tomorrow and the next day) that brings you joy.
Over time, you’ll get into the habit of prioritizing yourself so you can be the creator of your daily happiness.

Excellent tips! It’s so easy to lose focus on ourselves. But we can’t give unless we fill our cup first. I have to remind myself that it’s not selfish to focus on me. I will be better to/for others if I’m in a good place first.
So many great tips, thank you. We need to change the way we see time for ourselves, it is so important for overall well-being!
Thanks Stephanie! You bring up a great point – how we see ourselves (and how we prioritize ourselves) is really where it starts. Thanks for the note! xo
Awesome tips! Being able to say no has been especially helpful for me.
Hi Abby – thanks for sharing. Being able to say no is so empowering 🙂 Glad it’s something you can do.
Saying no when I have to and removing toxic people from my life are 2 things that I did, thankfully. Self care is primordial.
Saying no makes such a difference in your life. Glad to see you’re focused on making your happiness a priority especially with removing toxic people. 🙂
