250 One Word Writing Prompts for Your Journal

If you’re into journaling I have a new creative way of using journal prompts that I’m excited to share. It’s using one word writing prompts.

That’s it. Just one word.

What I love about this type of journaling is it allows you to free write, let your mind wander and get creative. It’s also handy to help you focus by providing a clear starting point.

Whether you’re an experienced writer, a journaling newbie, or someone looking to break out of a creative rut, these prompts offer a simple yet powerful way to explore your thoughts and emotions.

They invite you to dig deep, follow your instincts, and create something unique.

How do one word journal prompts work?

Well, if you were to choose a word like campfire your writing could unfold in a number of ways.

You might…

  • Describe the crackling sound of the fire and the light bouncing off the faces of your friends nearby
  • Reminisce about a time you sang songs around the campfire
  • Come up with a romantic story about a couple leaning into one another around a campfire
  • Write a poem about the dancing light of the campfire and how the shapes tell stories of their own

Depending on who you are, the experiences you’d have and your surroundings, you’ll use one-word journal prompts in a completely different way than someone else.

And that my friend is the creative writing beauty of getting inspiration from a single word.

When To Use One-Word Writing Prompts

There are so many different ways you can use these creative writing prompts, but here are some of my favourite examples. Use when:

  • You have writer’s block and you just need to get pen to paper
  • Choose a one-word writing prompt every day as part of a daily writing challenge
  • Share a writing prompt with your family, especially if you are encouraging your kids to write more
  • Creative inspiration to write a short story
  • Use as your daily creative journal entry
  • Choose a word and write other related single words that come to mind – you could do this in mind map format
  • Consider pairing your chosen words with images or creating word art as an additional creative exercise

Now, let’s get into this fun and creative prompts list…
