30 Nighttime Journal Prompts To Reflect and Unwind

If you’re anything like me, many times when you’re getting ready for bed your mind is still running a mile a minute and this is where using a nighttime journal prompt can really be helpful.

Journal prompts can help you end your day on a positive note and help you release unwanted thoughts onto paper so you don’t have them dancing around your head when you’re trying to fall asleep.

Below you’ll find some different journal prompts depending on how much time you have…

  • Quick writing prompts to do before bed (2-5 minutes)
  • More In-depth journal prompts to help you work through something (5+ minutes)

I have broken the prompts into these categories, as let’s face it, we don’t always have loads of time.

Sometimes we just need to set a positive intention or get something off our chest and the quick 2 to 3 minute prompts are perfect for this.

Other times we have the time and want to go deeper with our thoughts and this is where the slightly longer evening prompts are perfect.

But of course, there are no rules – you can switch them up and go deep with the shorter prompts and be more high-level with the ‘longer’ prompts. This is simply a guide to help you get started.

Quick Bedtime Journal Prompts (2 to 5 minutes)

These writing prompts are designed to give you a few minutes of thoughtful writing time. They can be added to your bedtime routine, right alongside brushing your teeth and washing your face.

1. List one positive thing that happened today.

This is the perfect time to think of things you are grateful for in this moment. Enjoy this moment and think about everything before you begin writing.

2. What is something you’re looking forward to tomorrow?

If you have a hard time coming up with this one, think smaller – that cozy cup of tea first thing in the morning, or reading another chapter of the book you’re reading.

3. Write your to-do list for tomorrow.

This does not need to be a big list – only include the things that you need to remember to do. This way you won’t be thinking about them as you’re trying to sleep.

4. How will you make the most of your day tomorrow?

This is a great way to set positive intentions for tomorrow. This is a little commitment you’ll make to yourself to follow through on something or to have a positive mindset, for example.

Check out this list of 21 positive intentions you could set.

5. What’s one thing you’d like to improve on tomorrow?

This could be a new habit you’re trying to work on such as drinking more water or something you’re working on to help you reach a goal.

6. Write a list of the people who love you.

You only need to include their names, but if you want to journal further you can also write a short line about how they support you.

7. What did you accomplish today? List big or small things.

Even on those days you feel like you didn’t accomplish much, I can bet you still accomplished things you didn’t give yourself credit for.

So take the time to think of a few things – how you might have helped someone, the fact that you ate a healthy lunch, or how you finally made that dentist appointment you’ve been putting off.

8. What are you grateful for in this moment?

This could be something that went well today or something as simple as you love having this alone time to write.

9. What is something you can do tomorrow to make the day run smoother?

Think of a small task that helps. It could be something in the home like making some rice first thing while you make your coffee so dinner is easier tomorrow.

Or it could be something at work, such as starting your day with an email to your boss about what you need to prioritize.

10. Write a list of 10 things that help you relax.

You can then select one of these things and do it right now. For example, lighting a candle, having a cozy tea, cuddling with your pet, or using a foot massager for a couple minutes.

11. What is one word to describe how you feel right now? Why?

If you happen to feel something positive, wonderful. End the writing here.

However, if you feel something negative or worrisome, please also write down one more word that is positive about your day – and then take a moment to reflect on that.

The goal here is to help you reflect but also wind down and relax so you can sleep.

12. What’s a small act of kindness you can do tomorrow?

There are so many little (and big things) we can go to be kind to others. Have a think about something you can fit into your day.

13. What is one thing you love about your morning routine?

This is good to ponder and will help you enjoy your morning tomorrow.

14. Write about something that made you feel proud today.

Think about any decision or action that made you feel good about yourself.

15. What made you smile today?

Make a list of everything you can think of and then take a moment to appreciate these little moments of joy.

In-Depth Evening Writing Prompts (5+ minutes)

I recommend doing these journal prompts in the evening, but perhaps not right before bed. These prompts will have you thinking on a deeper level and will require a little more time to make the most of them.

16. Release everything in your mind onto paper.

This is the perfect opportunity to let it all out – good and bad…

  • Negative, unwanted thoughts, stressful things that keep your mind busy, and huge to-do lists that weigh you down.
  • Things you’re looking forward to – upcoming plans,
  • Boring things – making that doctor’s appointment, starting your taxes

Note: Now, this only works for things you want to release from your mind. Do not try and come up with new things to focus on.

The goal here is to let all of those wandering thoughts onto paper so you can let them go before bed.

17. How can you be more kind to yourself tomorrow?

We can all be hard on ourselves, whether it’s beating ourselves up for not responding in a certain way, or eating a piece of cake when we ‘should’ have had salad, or not finishing our to-do list.

This is a reminder that you and I are human and perfection is never realistic. So take this time to think about ways you can treat yourself with love and kindness.

18. Write about a time when you overcame self-doubt and succeeded.

This prompt is designed to help you think of moments you may have felt you couldn’t do something, but you did it anyway. Perhaps it was a presentation at work, taking a trip on your own or starting a conversation with someone new.

19. Write about your relationships and who you want to be dedicating more time to.

Time is limited and this prompt allows you to rethink your schedule so you can create time for those people who matter most to you.

20. Think about where you were last year this time and reflect on what’s different today.

Use this time to write ideas for relationships, work, personal growth, health, money – anything that’s important to you.

21. Write a love letter to your future self.

Share encouragement, hope, and advice for the person you’re becoming. Tip: Write as if you were talking to someone you love, like your best friend.

22. How can you add more joy to your daily life?

Think about new habits or experiences you can add to your daily routine that simply bring you joy. For inspiration check out this post: 15 Ways to Find Joy in Life Again

23. What does self-love mean to you and how can you focus on it more?

Focus on simple ways you can love yourself more in this season of life.

24. Write about your ideal morning routine.

Next, think about adding one small thing tomorrow morning that can bring you one step closer to this routine.

25. What’s a personal goal you have and why is it important to you?

Think about ways this goal will improve your life for the better.

26. What does my dream life look like and how can I incorporate one of these things into my life right now?

You’d be surprised to know that so many things we wish for are actually possible for us right now. Sure – they may look a little different, but with the right mindset, the result can feel the same.

27. What life experiences are you most grateful for?

Think back to childhood, teen years, your education, life lessons, travel – all experiences that make you uniquely you.

28. List 10 things you can do to make yourself feel better on not-so-good days.

Having a list like this is important and something you can refer back to when you need it most.

29. Write about a place that makes you feel at peace.

This could be a physical place or a place you go to in your mind.

30. Write about a challenge you faced and how you became stronger because of it.

This is a reminder that hard things can still have a silver lining and allow us to learn and grow.
