How to Help the Environment and Really Create Change

In our fast-paced lives, many of us are surviving, and not quite thriving. This isn’t good on so many levels – not good for our health, our minds, our families – but have you ever thought about how this also severely impacts our environment?

How to Help the Environment and Really Create Change

Our guest writer, Audrey Taylor talks to us about how we all can make a change in our behaviours that can truly help make a difference to our beautiful, yet fragile environment.

We all know what’s going on with our planet, but most of us look the other way when it comes to truly changing our behaviours… and with world pollution, we also refuse to see the harming effects it has on our health.

On the other hand, over the years people have become more environmentally conscious, but only to some degree.

Many people WANT to help the environment but don’t think they have the time or money.

The destruction of the planet seems so vast that we think it’s too late to make an impact – to create change, especially as individuals. The truth is quite the opposite.

There is a lot we can do to help our environment and it simply starts with making a simple change in the way we think.

How to Help the Environment and Really Create Change

Let’s look at our routines from a greener point of view:

Cruising Around Town

By cruising we don’t simply mean going with your friends for a ride on a Saturday night (although that is one of the most unnecessary ways to increase pollution). Today people are cruising on an everyday basis.

The rhythm of life has become so fast due to numerous everyday obligations that it seems impossible to make it through the day without at least five car rides.

If you really look at the facts about car pollution you’ll start to think about the alternatives – and if we’re gonna be honest, there are plenty of them.

If you want to keep this ‘cruising’ luxury and you have the budget to afford it, you can simply choose from one of the eco-friendly cars out there.

If that is a too much of an investment and you don’t want to give up driving, another option is to car share.

Perhaps one colleague can pick up the other three on the way to work or you can find friends/neighbours with similar weekly or monthly errands?  You can also car share through some of the top car sharing & carpooling companies.

And of course, there is public transportation! You may think that taking the bus is not your thing (germs, dirt, crowds), BUT here’s the important question…

Are these concerns really that important, in comparison to reducing greenhouse gases and conserving energy?

(Which in return affects the future of our health, our families and the earth as we know it).

Another way of to reduce our driving is to work from home and shop online – if you’re in a position to be able to do that.  The goal (of course) is not to shut yourself in your home 24/7,  as our health is in a similar state as our planet’s climate.

So, taking a walk from time to time couldn’t hurt! If you need something faster a bicycle is always an option and the perfect exercise with many benefits.

Wrapped Up In Plastic

It’s really scary how far away we’ve gotten from nature. When you look at today’s modern home, there are very few natural materials inside. Wood is expensive and it should be!

Trees are dying every time we toss paper in the trash, after writing on only one side.

The main way plastic gets inside our homes…

Every time we, as consumers, pick up a coffee to go or use plastic bags from the store – this has plastic. You may think that coffee cups can be recycled, but this is false. There is a thin lining of plastic inside every cup to prevent the cup from going soggy.

The problem: The plastic clutter that we bring into our home, doesn’t remain there. It ends up on the landfill and in our waterways, harming and even killing our wildlife 🙁

How to make the change? Use a bamboo cup for the caffeine obsession and a couple of canvas bags strong enough for all your groceries. If you forget the cup and bags, then please recycle.

You Are What You (Don’t) Eat

You should be aware that not only plastic things are a dangerous waste. The fact that organic food is healthy doesn’t mean that its waste doesn’t have consequences.

As we know, there are nearly 1 billion hungry people in the world, every time you throw away food it usually ends up in landfills and in the end turns into methane, which is a highly destructive greenhouse gas.

How to Solve? Shop no more than you need and checking the expiration date prevents food from spoiling. You could also start growing your own food in order to appreciate the value that food brings. An important message for kids too!

These are just a few simple changes you can make in your daily routine that can help the environment. Just being aware of mother nature and understanding that our actions do matter when it comes to the impact on our environment.

One man alone maybe can’t make a revolutionary change, BUT he can set an example.

Be aware of mother nature and understand that our actions do matter when it comes to the impact on our #environment. #gogreen #ReduceReuseRecycle #earthday Share on X

  1. We as a human being living on this planet earth have the first responsibility to save the environment. By taking small steps only we can do great things for protecting the biosphere around us.

THANKS! for sharing this post and making people aware about this.

    1. Hi Rahul, Thanks for your feedback and I couldn’t agree more. Everyone has a part to play in looking after and healing our planet.

  2. This year I plan to make small DIY reusable bags for groceries so I don’t need to use numerous plastic bags to pack every type of groceries. I’ve read that eating meat also helps the planet since you save water that goes into meat production. Hopefully, my vegetarian lifestyle makes small impact 🙂

    1. That sounds fantastic! You can also purchase eco-friendly shopping bags on Amazon too. Either way, so important to get rid of the plastic. Reducing meat definitely helps as well. I actually watched a documentary the other day called The Game Changers (on Netflix) and it talks about how healthy a plant based diet is. Really interesting to watch! Have a good one Iryna!

  3. This is super interesting! I try to help the environment as much as possible and drive an electric car, however I do not use my tumbler when I get coffee and I always just assumed coffee cups could be recycled. Thanks for the practical tips!

    1. That’s so cool that you have an electric car! That definitely helps the environment. I too try and do as much as possible for the environment but find there’s always more to do!

  4. We went to California in 2016 and I was inspired by the way so many things are recycled and the food is composted. In my area, people think I’m strange when I say no to plastic straws and bags. I have a big yard, so I compost what I can.

  5. Wow, I did not know that about my Starbucks cup at all. But it definitely makes sense, the liner does not feel recyclable (I am sorry to say I am sitting here with one right now).
It is so important to help the environment in even the smallest and simplest of ways.

  6. I love how many places have no bags now! It is SUCH a great reminder (or forcer) to use my resuable bags!

  7. Yea, the plastic is for real. I’m trying to keep reusable bags in my car all the time now. Otherwise it’s such a waste!

  8. What an eye-opening post. And I really appreciate you offering actionable suggestions on what we can do to help. My city just switched over from plastic to all-paper bags in stores. This was a big (positive) change around here. Now we don’t waste plastic bags for every little purchase. And because the paper grocery bags are so large, it makes people think twice about needing a bag for every small item.

  9. What a great concept. I have been trying very hard to meal plan my leftovers to decrease the amount of food we waste in this house.

  10. Just be aware and start making small lifestyle changes. Pretty soon you will realize how much you are actually doing.

  11. Great ideas! I love that plastic shopping bags are banned here in my state. Cloth bags are a really simple way to cut down on plastic usage.

  12. I really like shopping at Aldi and Trader Joes. TJ’s does paper bags and Aldi does no bags. That’s not why I shop there, but I do like that aspect of it. I try to reuse any plastic bags I get from the store, but I admit that they still end up in the trash at the end of their “life”. I need to make more of an effort.

    1. Every little bit helps 🙂 If I have any plastic bags at home, I use them for garbage – it saves me having to buy bags for garbage too. (I wish we had Trader Joe’s in Canada!)
