5 IDEA STARTERS TO GET YOU WRITING YOUR BEST WORK YET!
1. MAKE A LIST OF TOPICS YOU KNOW A LOT ABOUT.
Writing is all about being authentic and sharing your knowledge, experiences and point of view with your audience. When you write in your blog you also want to enjoy yourself and the best way to do this is to write about what you know.
- To start, jot down categories, for example: parenting, travel, food, etc.
- Then add specific article titles to each category. Make sure to include article ideas you know you could write a minimum of 500+ words on, but ideally 800+
- Don’t worry about the quality of the title (at this point) – just get the idea down
Once you make your list, keep on hand so you can refer back to it, as well as add to it when you need inspiration on what to write.
2. WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? WHAT DO YOU ENJOY WRITING?
When you complete this section you might be amazed that you’ve come up with content ideas that you weren’t planning on including in your blog… and that’s okay.
For example, I originally didn’t intend on writing about money, however I have so many tips on how to save and I came up with a good few articles ideas on saving money that I decided to write a post about it… 10 Simple Ways to Save Money This Week. I now have many more money related articles I’m planning on publishing.
3. MAKE A LIST OF ALL THE CONTENT YOU WISH YOU COULD FIND ONLINE
We may be inundated with every topic going, but I bet there are times you have to do a ton of searches to find an answer, which you may or may not get.
A search I am CONSTANTLY looking for online is, ‘How to live with infertility’. I honestly never find an answer. I hear everything from “eat more avocados” to “eat the core of a pineapple after ovulating”, but this is NOT what I am looking for! I just want to know how people can actually cope with the loss and grief of infertility and still live their daily lives.
This frustrates me, and I’m sure there are things you get frustrated about that you can not find online.
Highlight all of the items that you wish you could find. Maybe you can be the one to fill that content gap?
4. WHAT ARE YOUR NUMBERS TELLING YOU?
Of the posts you’ve already written, which ones have the highest page views and time spent? This is a great indicator of what content is truly resonating with your audience.
Once you know what content your audience is spending the most time with, can you see a theme?

These are very niche topics, but clearly people are passionate and curious about them.
Have a think about the content you’ve written that your audience is most passionate about reading. Your numbers from Google Analytics will tell you exactly what content this is.
5. WHAT CONTENT ARE PEOPLE MOST ENGAGED WITH?
What posts have the most shares and most comments?
This is another great indicator of what people like most about your existing content. Can you write more posts related to those topics? If yes, how will the new content enhance or add more detail to the posts you’ve already written?
Your audience is important in everything you do. If you want to make your blog a business your audience must be your #1 priority. By combining topics you love to write about, plus taking information about what your audience loves will direct you to the core areas to focus on for your blog.
Also, keep in mind to try new things constantly. People’s interest change based on many factors, such as time of year and trends, so keeping on top of this is also important to being top of mind and relevant for your audience.
