Whether you rent or own your home there are many tasks that are important to take care of to get ready for a new season.
I’m not a typical ‘organizer’, however, I get really excited about the newness that spring provides.
New buds on the trees
Birdsong in the air
The smell of grass growing
The sun kissing your skin
Days getting longer
Ah! Just a few of the reasons I love spring.
To embrace the new season there are many things to take care of in your home and life, so I’ve prepared the ultimate checklist for you to tackle so you can enjoy all things spring.
Let’s do this!

The Ultimate Resource To Get Your Home Ready For Spring
Outdoors
The Garden
- Clean the lawn. Rake and pick up leftover leaves from the autumn, fallen tree branches and debris.
- Plant Pots. Remove any leftover annuals from last year (from the root), then loosen the dirt in plant pots with a garden trowel. Add additional soil to add nutrients and top up. Plant some daffodils and or tulips to add some spring flowers to your home.
- Don’t trim yet! Hold off on trimming the plants in your garden yet, unless you know what it is! Sometimes we can forget which perennials are in the garden, so give them time to grow before you ‘clean up’. Once the perennials are a little larger, feel free to dig in the garden to loosen the soil.
- Start planting. If you are in a cold climate (like myself): don’t plant anything if the night temperatures are still going below freezing. You must be patient and wait until late May in many cases.
- Once it’s warm enough to start your garden, go ahead and get started. Kristen at Shiftingroots.com has some great gardening resources on getting started.
- Grass Seed. Hold off on putting down grass seed until May – June. You’ll want to ensure it’s warm enough for the seed to root. Here’s everything you need to know about grass seed when it is time to begin.
The BBQ
- Clean the BBQ. Get out the BBQ and give it a clean. Use soapy water to clean baked-on food from the grill and give the inside a good cleaning.
- Clean grease traps. This is not only gross but if not kept clean it can also be unsafe if a spark ignites the grease. So, keep it clean!
- Fill the tank. Make sure your propane tank is filled… Spring is another great time to pick up a second tank as backup. There is nothing worse than running out of gas halfway through BBQing for a dinner party, so the backup will definitely come in handy.
- Replace last year’s BBQ brush. This is really important as there have been cases where a bristle falls out onto the grill and ends up in someone’s burger. Very dangerous and scary.
Extras
- Turn on the outside water faucet. You should have turned this off before winter from the inside of your house, so go back in and turn it on. Test the outside faucet to make sure it’s flowing fine.
- Check that the hose doesn’t have any small leaks. If there are leaks, this is a good time to replace the hose. Last year I picked an expandable hose and I would never go back to a regular hose. They are so much easier to manoeuvre and take up zero storage space in the off-season.
- Replace your entryway doormats. This is a great way to add spring to your entrance and most likely your other doormat has had it after a long winter.
Here are some cute doormats that with give your entryway a fresh ‘spring lift’!
I treated myself to this one 🙂

Indoors
- Treat yourself to spring flowers. I love tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, which are all bulb plants. I recommend buying the whole plant, so you can enjoy indoors and then plant the bulbs in the ground in the fall for the following year.
- Open your windows. Let the fresh air in. Did you know that the winter air in our homes is really bad for us? Learn more here.
- Spring clean. Pick a weekend to spring clean and get everyone in your house involved. Here is a fantastic spring cleaning list you can print out, over at I’m Busy Being Awesome.

Fridge/Freezer
Give your fridge a good clean out
- Go through EVERYTHING!
- Check out the expiration dates on all bottles/condiments
- Clean all the shelves
- Look at adding a new fridge organization system to keep on track with meal planning and easy to reach healthy snacks. This also makes it a lot easier to keep the fridge clean.
Go through your freezer
- Get rid of freezer burnt items.
- Take note of what you have and incorporate the food into a meal plan. This way you can focus on eating everything you currently have in your freezer before buying more. This will make you feel good and save you money!
Buy seasonal foods.
This is good for your health and your budget. Also, buying in season means supporting local farmers, so start seeking out local farmers markets to buy your fresh produce.
- Depending on where you live different foods will be in season so do your homework to see what’s freshest in your area. My favourite spring foods: asparagus, rhubarb and fresh peas.
Clothing
- Pack away your warmest winter clothes (after washing of course). Keep a few lighter sweaters on hand, but say goodbye to your warmest winter clothing. If you’re tight on space I recommend under the bed organizers or closet baskets for your smaller items.
- Wash all your coats and jackets. Take your coats to the dry cleaner, but your heavy winter jackets can be washed and dried at home.
- Collect all of your hats, gloves, scarves and put them in one place, so they won’t be lost when you’re looking for them the following winter.
- Unpack your spring clothes. I love this part! See what fits, what you like and anything else – donate.
- Treat yourself to a few spring staples to update your wardrobe. I like to get a couple of light cardigans, new ankle boots and a new spring jacket.
Your Car
- Replace winter tires with your all-seasons.
- Get an oil change and a maintenance check. Spring is the perfect time to do this if you live in a cold climate as I get my winter tires removed at the same time as my spring maintenance check.
- Give your car the deluxe cleaning on the outside to remove the winter buildup of salt
- Get your car detailed or give the interior a good cleaning yourself.
- Tackle the trunk. Remove winter brushes, bags and all that stuff you’ve been collecting and forgetting to bring in the house. Now’s the time to get everything in their proper home.

Hi Lee – Hope it’s helpful! Anf here’s to hoping the warm weather appears soon!
I am so behind spring regularly but I think we could use some real spring soon now.
With the craziness of the world right now I’m just desperate for some outdoor spring activity! Let’s hope we start seeing some flowers soon to cheer everyone up!
Wow! Can I get permission to extend this into summer 😉
Ha! Of course 😉 take your time or just choose the items that you want to do. By no means, does everything on this list need to be tackled!
Great list! My husband and I are both still working right now but we have this weekend off, so we’re going to tackle some of the spring cleaning. In particular, I want to tackle the back yard! With the warmer weather rolling in, I know that I’m going to want to be working outside more and spending more time out there with the pups – so I need to make sure that it’s ready!
Thanks so much Britt! I can’t wait to get outside and start cleaning up too. Here’s to sunny days ahead (fingers crossed)!
