As mentioned in my earlier post, DIY Chai Masala Spice Mix, I spent a good amount of time travelling in India years ago and since being back in Canada it’s been VERY hard to find an authentic cup of Masala Chai (Indian spiced tea). Making this authentic masala chai at home is definitely a treat.
I usually drink my tea with no sugar, but for this recipe sugar is a must! This is literally a dessert drink, perfect after your Indian take out and also amazing when hosting a dinner party.
- 1 cup milk (dairy or almond milk)
- 3 cups cold water
- 2 black tea bags or 2 tsp of black loose leaf tea
- 1/2 tsp tea masala mix
- 1/2 tsp fresh ginger, grated (optional)
- Sugar to taste (In India they make is very sweet, which I like, but definitely add your preferred amount)
In a heavy pan bring water to boil, then add the tea (bags or loose leaf). Boil for 2-3 minutes.
Add milk, tea masala mix and grated ginger (if using).
Boil the ingredients until the tea is golden brown. Strain if using loose leaf tea and pour into your mug or tea pot.
Add sugar to taste.
